If you know of any elderly or disabled citizens living in substandard housing, perhaps who are too low-income to pay for repairs, or too frail to do-it-yourself maintenance, it may be a safety or sanitation issue that could be addressed by one or more local service agencies. A good place to begin seeking help is to call the Area Agency on Aging Office or Adult Protective Services. Meals On Wheels has a staffer who attends meetings trying to deal with increasing the affordable housing choices here, promoting non-discrimination in housing, and improving services to hungry citizens of all ages. As talk radio star and financial adviser Dave Ramsey says “The good life begins with secure shelter and secure food supplies, and continues with good health care.” While Meals On Wheels “piece of the social services pie” is, literally, pie, we try to help in those others areas to the best of our ability.
